On Wednesday, 26th March 2025, at the European Parliament, we hosted the Policy Roundtable “Towards Competitive European Water Resilience” in collaboration with the Association of Waterworks Companies (AVS).
Together with MEPs Nils Ušakovs and Monika Beňová, Veronica Manfredi (European Commission, DG ENV), Denis Bonvillain (VEOLIA), Vazil Hudak (former VP, European Investment Bank), Milena Angelova (EESC), and Ivana Mahríková (Association of Slovak Waterwork Companies), we explored how Europe can strengthen competitiveness while ensuring long-term water security.
Key insights:
- Closing the funding gap for infrastructure renewal and innovation.
- Strengthening public-private partnerships and aligning water pricing with actual costs.
- Leveraging smart metering, digitalization, and nature-based solutions for greater resilience.
- Elevating Europe’s role in “blue diplomacy” to drive global leadership in water security.
With the EU Preparedness Strategy now adopted, the message is clear: securing Europe’s water future requires smart investments, strong regulatory frameworks, and a fair social compact.
